For centuries, dolphins have fascinated humans with their intelligence, emotional depth, and strong social bonds. Now, in a groundbreaking project, Google is combining its artificial intelligence expertise with decades of marine research to better understand how dolphins talk to each other — and maybe, one day, even let humans join the conversation.

The Project Behind DolphinGemma

In collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) — a Florida-based nonprofit dedicated to studying dolphins for over 40 years — Google has introduced DolphinGemma. This innovative AI model builds upon Google’s lightweight open AI platform, Gemma, and is specifically designed to analyze dolphin vocalizations.

WDP researchers have spent decades associating dolphin sounds with different behaviors. Signature whistles, for instance, help mothers and calves reconnect, while rapid “squawks” often accompany fights. Dolphins also produce clicking sounds during courtship or when chasing away predators like sharks. These rich datasets provided the foundation for DolphinGemma’s training.

How DolphinGemma Works

DolphinGemma processes vast libraries of recorded dolphin sounds to detect repeating patterns, structures, and possibly even meanings behind the vocalizations. The ultimate goal is to categorize these sounds similarly to how human language is structured into words, sentences, and expressions.

According to Google’s blog post on the project, the model identifies recurring patterns and sequences in the sounds — a task that traditionally required extensive human effort. Over time, researchers hope to build a shared “vocabulary” with dolphins, using synthetic sounds created to represent objects the dolphins commonly interact with.

Technology at Play

To achieve high-quality recordings, DolphinGemma leverages audio technology from Google’s Pixel smartphones. These devices are capable of isolating dolphin clicks and whistles from background noises like ocean waves, boat motors, and underwater disturbances. Clean audio data is critical, as noisy recordings can confuse AI models during training.

Looking Ahead

Google plans to release DolphinGemma as an open-source model this summer. This will allow researchers worldwide to explore their own acoustic datasets and advance the study of dolphin communication even further.

Though DolphinGemma was initially trained on Atlantic spotted dolphins, with some adjustments, it could be adapted to work with other dolphin species like bottlenose or spinner dolphins.

Through initiatives like this, Google and its research partners hope to accelerate the understanding of one of nature’s most intelligent marine mammals — bringing humans one step closer to unlocking the secrets of dolphin language.
