This stationary machine, formally named Pol Col Nakhonpathom Plod Phai (translated: “Nakhon Pathom is safe”), is equipped with 360-degree surveillance cameras, facial recognition, and integration with local CCTV and drone feeds. Its core function is real-time crowd analysis, detecting threats such as knives while filtering out harmless items like water pistols. The robot’s data is sent directly to a command center to enable quick police response.
Despite its advanced features, critics note limitations. Its fixed position and dependency on existing surveillance tools call into question its added value. Some also argue that the humanoid appearance — complete with a police uniform — is more performative than practical, as it lacks movement and requires nearby officers to prevent tampering.
China’s Robotic Push: Interactive and Agile
China has taken a more dynamic route, showcasing humanoid robots capable of engaging with the public. In Shenzhen, the PM01 model, created by EngineAI, interacts directly with people — responding to voice prompts, waving to crowds, and even performing flips.
These robots are built on open-source software, allowing international developers to expand functionality. In parallel, China has also introduced RT-G, a spherical, amphibious robot that can endure high impacts and reach speeds of up to 22 mph, making it suitable for more rugged environments.
The U.S. Approach: Data-Driven Tools Without Humanoids
American law enforcement agencies are taking a more cautious stance, favoring AI tools over humanoid designs. The NYPD’s K5 robot, used temporarily in subway stations, offered 360-degree video monitoring but excluded facial recognition to protect privacy. The pilot program ended amid concerns about transparency and potential misuse of surveillance footage.
Meanwhile, cities like Los Angeles and Memphis continue to use predictive policing systems, which leverage AI to assess crime trends and deploy resources accordingly. However, these tools have drawn criticism over alleged racial bias and the lack of community oversight.
Global Perspectives: Balancing Security and Civil Liberties
While AI-enhanced policing may offer improved situational awareness in large gatherings, the technology invites serious debate. Supporters highlight its potential to deter threats in real time. Opponents, however, point to the risk of invasive surveillance, misuse of facial recognition, and ambiguous data storage policies.
In both Thailand and China, the use of facial recognition has fueled discussions on civil liberties and data protection. In the U.S., legal and ethical boundaries remain under scrutiny, particularly concerning Fourth Amendment rights related to surveillance.
